The markets struggled all day over concern about recent financial issues in Europe and in the end the major markets were up only slightly. In other business news on this Monday:
A travel agency goes under and strands thousands of people;
Where are American's on a national health care program;
Apple to return to Austin for manufacturing at least one computer;
More layoffs for General Motors workers;
Music, the law and "Stairway to Heaven".

The State of Mental Health in Iowa

If it seems like everything is being blamed on "mental health" and...that's because it is. Everything from mass shootings to domestic abuse is being blamed on folks with mental health issues. And, what is even more stunning, as you heard in our news story today, the demand for mental health services is growing. If all of this is true, and you know it is, why are we not funding mental health care at the level of need? It's a good question and it's what I asked Peggy Huppert from the organization NAMI-Iowa. Today sitting down with Elizabeth Buck the President of The United Way of Central Iowa and Seth Johnson the program director for OpportUNITY and talking about poverty in Des Moines, Iowa. In a city that boasts a fantastic quality of life there are still large pockets of poverty and families dealing with housing, transportation, child care and wages. Here is Part One.

An Unexpected Short Story - The Salvation Army

Last weekend I did a day of service and worked with the local Salvation Army collecting school supplies for kids who have little. While there a man approached us and started talking about a program offered by the Salvation Army. After he left I asked Major Jason Poff about what is known as the ARC. Here is that conversation.
