The stock market was set to open lower this morning but...SURPRISE at the open the Dow jumped up by over 100 points. Only to edge lower at mid-day. Why? That reason is in the newscast today. Also:
The 401k lawsuits are mounting we share why;
Johnson & Johnson must pay Oklahoma $572 million but the stock goes up;
China says, "Hey, nobody called!" And that is part of the problem;
China and Costco...we think it's a hit;
Boeing and Russia...think lawsuit;
Seeking nominations in Iowa.
Those stories and more today along with a look back at a conversation I had with California Congressman Ro Khanna who was instrumental in bringing high technology to Rural Iowa. That space in Jefferson will open to the public on September 7th. We thought it important to go back to last year and this conversation with the Congressman. Here is that conversation.

Last year California Congressman Ro Khanna was in Jefferson Iowa to help launch the Pillar Technology Hub that will open for the public on September 7th. Congressman Khanna was instrumental in gathering some Silicon Valley giants together for this project and he'll be back for the open house event. I thought it might be valuable to look back at this conversation that happened when the project was announced to an overflow crowd.

Once upon a time Friday was known as a slow news day. Like if you wanted to bury something that might not be flattering you could release it on Friday. Well, that's not the case any more. Welcome to the Business News Headlines for Friday the 23rd day of August and thanks for being here. On tap:
President Trump calls Fed Chair Jerome Powell an "enemy;
President Trump orders U.S. businesses to get out of China;
A Major Chinese company says sanctions against them not too bad;
The Great Recession is still fresh, what might the next bring?
Knowing who might quit next might be valuable;
Apple is said to launch several new products next month.
Those stories and more about this "Slow News Friday" are just a click away. Also, because it is Friday we've got Jeff Pitts the Managing Editor of Cityview with us and "Stuff to DO in the Des Moines Metro" this weekend into next week. To listen to us having a good time, click here!

Wall Street showed up again today in spite of global concerns, the trade war and more. That's first up today and then we'll dive into these stories:
Target and Lowes did well in the second quarter;
The Fed Minutes and what it may mean going forward;
Health Insurance and family/business costs;
The U.S. Budget Deficit...lots of zeros at the end of "1";
A Nebraska woman scammed out of over $162,000. No, it's a story.
Those items and a conversation with Deborah Rinner the Chief Learning Officer at Tero International about employee engagement or employee entitlement. She gives me (and you if you wish) a quiz on how to avoid the trap of making employee recognition something that does the opposite of motivation. Good stuff right here.

They say that "hope springs eternal" and investors, before the bell where hoping for a good day on Wall Street. In the end the major markets were all down with the Dow off by 173 points as financials took it in the shorts. In other business news today:
Home Depot beats estimates but...there is a but;
A major retailer considers getting out of the gun sale business;
Trouble brewing for American consumers;
What? Guns being sold on Facebook Marketplace;
Disney whistleblower says the company has misstated billions in revenue;
New Google App for "emerging nations" could be 1 billion users.
Those stories and more along with Marketing4Business and Phil K. James of Good Milkshake Digital. He's back and this month our focus is on gathering data from your Facebook posts. What do you do with it? You sell more stuff. To hear that conversation click here.

We're back with Marketing for Business and our friend Phil K. James with Good Milkshake Digital. Yeah, it's been several months but, we've hooked up again. Today we're talking about Facebook, data, sales and how you can master some pretty simple tricks to allow you to boost your engagement and collect data allowing you to re-market your product or service. Now, while Phil works a bunch in the hospitality industry his method, we prove, can be used along other verticals as well. Click through...and even if we get a little "geeky" I think you'll get the point.

The markets recovered some of their August sell-off today with the Dow up 249 points, the Nasdaq gaining 106 points and the S&P 500 up by 34 points and change. The reason? Bond yields rose, the government is giving U.S. businesses 90 days to do business with Huawei and President Trump telling everybody that the trade talks are going well. It was enough to boost stocks. In other news:
Target to launch yet another private brand;
The problem for restaurants with food delivery companies;
Major corporate CEO's today stunned the world;
Stress and the job search.
Those stories plus Laura Kinnard from DMBizMixer joins me to talk about the business of the Iowa State Fair that say 1.1 million visitors attend, some networking events and the Hashies are this week. You can hear all of that right here.

Some days ya just don't know where to start. It was projected that the Dow was going to open strong this morning. That didn't happen but what did happen is our first story:
It's enough to make you shiver;
To drive customers into its store J.C. Penny will sell....
General Electric a "fraud bigger than Enron"? Yikes;
Big back to school items are...bullet proof. We're not kidding;
Walmart "open" to the discussion of banning assault weapons.
Those stories plus a conversation with Dr. Chris Draper the author of Violicity Economics...where we start out but the main focus of our visit is about "deep-fakes" and making sure what you have created is what you created and when it was created. Sound...deep? Meet the founder of Trokt and Hang on this will be something for you to hear.

A returning visitor to the Business News Hour is Dr. Chris Draper the author of Violicity Economics and founder of Trokt. We start out talking economics before we launch into the real reason we're together. Dr. Draper, quite by accident, has learned about document and document storage. But, more than that, in a court of law, how do you prove what you have in your hand is original? After all, it could be a "deep-fake". Mind bending? A bit...but listen in as he explains what he learned and how block-chain solves a major problem for creators of every type.
