Those stories and a Two-Part conversation with California Congressman Ro Khanna. This is Part One of my conversation with Congressman Ro Khanna who has been to Iowa nearly as often as some presidential candidates. His efforts have largely been in support of new technologies that will re-imagine Rural America. We talk about that, Silicon Valley, unions and more before we get into Medicare for All in the next segment. To listen click here.
Here, in Part Two of my conversation with California Congressman Ro Khanna, we talk about Medicare for All something that Congressman Khanna has supported and says there is so much dis-information out there he wants to set the record straight. So, we talk about taxes, rural hospitals, health care today and much more. Then, we visit a bit about Sen. Bernie Sanders and how his recent hospital trip may make his call for a universal health care system more...personal. Listen here!

Tuesday Sep 17, 2019
Recently authors Michael Bornstein and his daughter Debbie Bornstein Holinstat made several stops in Iowa speaking to adults and children about their book, "Survivors Club - The True Story of a Very Young Prisoner of Auschwitz". After one of the events organized by the Iowa Jewish Historical Society I had the opportunity to sit down with them and talk about the story, Michael's ties to Iowa, the emotion Debbie brings to the presentation and how this story is being used as a teaching tool in schools across the country. Here is that conversation.

This is a bit late in getting out. We were, often, distracted by the images of eighteen years ago and 9/11 and our own memories of where we were at the time...never forget. In the business news headlines today:
The Dow breaks above 27,000 thank you Apple;
President Trump lobbies hard for a rate cut to zero;
Purdue Pharma is said to be close to a settlement;
UAW leaders to huddle in Detroit...will they strike GM?
Victoria's Secret rethinking the the "super model";
How about a Progressive Pizza Pie?
Those stories and we've got a rare extended interview. Today sitting down with Elizabeth Buck the President of The United Way of Central Iowa and Seth Johnson the program director for OpportUNITY and talking about poverty in Des Moines, Iowa. In a city that boasts a fantastic quality of life there are still large pockets of poverty and families dealing with housing, transportation, child care and wages. Here is Part One.
In Part Two of our conversation we start to look at ways to reduce the stress on working families and how the United Way of Central Iowa is working to that end. We also cover several bright spots including the high school graduation rate. Here is Part Two.

In this, the first of two parts of an interview with Elizabeth Buck, President of the United Way of Central Iowa and Seth Johnson program director for OpportUNITY we lay out several significant issues impacting a number of Iowans in the Greater Des Moines Metro. From housing to child care to transportation to wages...all within the shadow of what many of us see as a thriving community. We usually don't extend our interviews into two parts but, because so much is here...we thought it better to split up our conversation. Here is Part One.

Tuesday Sep 10, 2019
Tuesday Sep 10, 2019
Recently the public was able to view The Forge a training and work center in the rural community of Jefferson, Iowa. The opening of this center has lots of moving parts including Pillar Technology, the city, county and state. There are Silicon Valley folks, Iowa Central Community College, Des Moines Area Community College...it's a big deal. Here, in this brief overview, we chat with the Mayor of Jefferson, Craig Berry, a recipient of a DMACC scholarship, Safora Khan and California Congressman Ro Khanna who had much to do with bringing the parties together. If replicated, this could be a major boost to communities across the U.S.
