  • Airline stocks improving;
  • News news from Delta Airlines;
  • Congress is in a pickle...again;
  • The Wall Street Report;

Those stories plus this about a lifelong friendship and how that translates into finding a way for you to be part of something much bigger then you can imagine.  My guest is Doug Burns from the Carroll Times Herald and it's quite the story.  To listen, click here.

He Has Protected Millions - Now Ellioit Kaye Needs Your Help

The other day I got a note from my friend Doug Burns the co-owner and Vice President of News at the Carroll Times Herald asking me to read a story he had just written. After reading I did something I rarely do; I picked up the phone and asked Doug for an interview. Why? Well, it's because this is a story that talks about hope and friendship and more. It's about lifelong friends Doug Burns and a Commissioner for the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, Elliot Kaye who, during his career has protected millions of Americans. In this piece we talk a bit about the media, Iowa, folks that we have in common and then launch into why Elliot could use your help  Here, by the way, is the link to the Georgetown University Medical Center Kidney Transplant Site.  Yeah...that. And maybe, just maybe, if this gets around to enough folks we might find a match.

Science and COVID19 with Yogesh Shah, MD - Broadlawns Medical Center

If you pay attention to the news about COVID19, and who doesn't, you will hear various stories about everything from testing (or a lack of the same) to how it will just, like magic, disappear. Recently Yogesh Shah, M.D. the Medical Director for Broadlawns Medical Center of Des Moines, Iowa did a session with AARP-Iowa taking questions and answering concerns. We thought it would be great to invite him to The Business News Hour to separate fact from fiction. While we could not be more anxious for business to get "back to normal" quickly...as we examined the scientific reality of the pandemic...that seems less and less likely. He also shares details of a new test and Broadlawns is partnering with The United Way of Central Iowa to reach many in underserved sections of the community.  Here is Dr. Shah.

The Business News Headlines 12 May 2020

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is an important measure of the nation's economy. Those numbers came out today and it gives one...pause.  Here are the business news headlines from today:

  • You're not spending and nobody can blame you;
  • The restaurant business may change...forever;
  • Walmart to give employees more money;
  • Renters, Landlords and Wall Street;
  • Movies and Films - How theaters might lure you back;
  • The Wall Street report
  • Elon Musk says, "Arrest me!"

Those stories and a Partly Personal Piece. I had to test out some new equipment for an upcoming interview and who better to use as our "test dummies" than family.  A brief conversation about how a Mother and Daughter are dealing with, what has been called, the "new normal".  You can hear that right here.

Thanks for listening.

Partly Personal - Checking In With Family

It's what they are calling the "new normal" except there is nothing normal about any of this. In a partly personal piece I decided to share a brief story about how a mother and daughter are rolling through their extended time together. For those of us who are adults it's one thing but when you're 12 and very social...  Here is a brief conversation with Hunter Pease (yes, the "Voice of the Business News Hour"...now you know) and her daughter Jovie.

The Iowa Refugee and Immigrant Community with Stephanie Moris

Immigration and those who come to our country seem to be top of mind these days given the reduction in numbers set out by the White House. Recently we became aware of the Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa a resource for those assisting refugees and immigrants in the Hawkeye State. Here Stephanie Moris the Director of the program shares some shocking numbers and stats regarding the process.  We also talk about COVID19 and what she is hearing from people who are immigrants and who fear going back to work.
