The Business News Headlines 19 November 2019
Tuesday Nov 19, 2019
Tuesday Nov 19, 2019
Just as we started the news President Trump says that if there is no deal between the U.S. and China that he will increase tariffs well above the current rate. That should have business worried. In other news today:
Older workers are hiding but their productivity is huge;
International Students and the Economy;
The cheapest car in America is...;
A lawsuit over "meatless meat";
Wages and Small Towns;
Wall Street struggled today and why;
DoorDash in legal trouble.
Also today we're chatting about the thousands of jobs that are unfilled and the thousands of workers who are looking. Kyle Horn from America's Job Honor Awards says there is a "win-win" for workers and employers if businesses will look at, often, sidelined people. It's a great story and idea. Here's Kyle:

Thursday Nov 07, 2019
Thursday Nov 07, 2019
It's perhaps something that you've never thought of. You go and buy something. You own that thing right? However what you so often can not do is fix it yourself. That's called having the "Right to Repair" and our guest today is Gay Gordon-Byrne from the consumer group Repair.org. Here we'll talk about everything from smartphones to agricultural equipment to refrigerators (no, really!) that consumers buy but then find they have no ability to fix it because manufacturers hold the key. This is pretty interesting stuff...

Des Moines Public Schools Need Your Vote
Wednesday Oct 30, 2019
Wednesday Oct 30, 2019
When it a tax...not really a tax? We'll answer that question today with our guest Dr. Tom Ahart the Superintendent of Schools for the Des Moines Public Schools. Here is the quick story. On Tuesday 5 November voters in Des Moines will be asked to approve the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) which will allow the school district to have the necessary dollars for critical maintenance to the 71 buildings in the district plus be able to support new technology for students. All without raising property taxes. Listen in as Dr. Ahart and I discuss and then, I'd urge you to vote YES for PPEL on Tuesday. To learn more here is a link to the website about PPEL.

Several weeks ago I met Connie Grunder who has been sharing the story about her son Zach. She attended one of many NAMI Walks and I asked her if she might want to tell her story to you. Mental health and mental health awareness is complicated for many and it has a deep impact on businesses, schools...and of course...families. Here is Zach's Story. And, if you would like Connie to come to your school or business here is the link to NAMI of Iowa.

The Business News and More 16 October 2019
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
Yesterday everybody was excited about earnings reports...today...not so much. We've got a full boat for you let's get started:
Yesterday was a memory as retail sales numbers sank Wall Street;
The United Auto Workers and General Motors...a settlement?
Need new tires before winter? We've got a tip;
Airlines are fretting over the return of the Boeing Max 737;
The ghost of 2016 comes back to haunt Wells Fargo;
Big meat is falling in love with...no meat.
Those stories plus my two-part interview with Des Moines mayoral candidate former Sen. Jack Hatch. In Part One we'll review who Jack is and why he is running. He'll talk about water, Des Moines, education and "forgotten neighborhoods". Here is Part One.
Then in Part Two we'll talk about something nobody seems to want to discuss and that is the crushing poverty just outside of downtown. He's got some ideas and we were eager to listen. Plus, and yes, we'll talk about potholes. Here is Part Two with Jack Hatch.
Thanks for listening!

Jack Hatch and Des Moines Part One
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
