The Business News Headlines 28 February 2019

In spite of some positive economic news today the failed trip to Hanoi regarding the talks between the U.S. and North Korea had investors upset. That story along with:

  • Employees walk out of three Sonic locations in Ohio;
  • It seems that Millennials have "buyers remorse" about their new home;
  • The GAP is spinning off Old Navy;
  • The tip I was given last week about the University of Iowa Community Credit Union was spot on;
  • The Des Moines Blank Park Zoo owes about $5 million in water bills...yikes!
  • What happened and why on Wall Street.

Those stories plus a conversation with Kirk Miller from Casey's General Store, an Iowa based convenience store chain, about a new fuel card for businesses. We talk about this new offering, how it works and how it is different than others and who can get it. Also we talk about pizza (you KNEW that was coming) and how a unsuccessful hostile takeover bid helped the company focus. To hear that conversation click here.

Thanks for listening!

New from Casey’s General Store a Fleet Gas Card & Much More

It was one of those business interviews that just clicked. I sat down with Kirk Miller the Commercial Fuels Manager at Casey's General Store (an Iowa based convenience store chain) to talk about their new MasterCard themed fleet fuel card. Sure lots of places have fuel cards but this one is a bit different in the fact you don't have to use it at a Casey's if there is not one near you. We talked about that the company focus on pizza and how an unsuccessful hostile takeover bid helped the company focus. Lot's to unpack...here is Kirk:

The Business Mind of Duane Ellett and The Floppy Show

For thirty years Duane Ellett entertained Central Iowa with his creation, "The Floppy Show" but few have an understanding of the brilliant mind that created a real business out of balsa wood and felt. Our guest is author, historian and news director for News Talk 1540 KXEL, Jeff Stein who will be in Ankeny on Thursday for a free presentation about his book The Floppy Show and the magic and mind of the late Duane Ellett. Gov. Martin O’Malley on Elections, Iowa, the Economy and “Down Ballot” Races

He is one of our favorite people to interview. Recently former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley was in Iowa stumping for a host of Democrats seeking election to the Iowa Statehouse and to the U.S. Congress. We caught up with him as he was helping Iowa House candidate Heather Matson in Ankeny. We start the conversation talking about the economy, Wall Street, wages and then work into a discussion as to why he believes the right way to build the future of the Democratic Party is to work hard for candidates not at the top of the ballot.  Gov. Martin O'Malley:
