It was one of those business interviews that just clicked. I sat down with Kirk Miller the Commercial Fuels Manager at Casey's General Store (an Iowa based convenience store chain) to talk about their new MasterCard themed fleet fuel card. Sure lots of places have fuel cards but this one is a bit different in the fact you don't have to use it at a Casey's if there is not one near you. We talked about that the company focus on pizza and how an unsuccessful hostile takeover bid helped the company focus. Lot's to unpack...here is Kirk:

This week while working on another story for the Business News Hour I ran across an educational display in the Iowa Statehouse where bee keepers and honey manufacturers were there to talk about the economics of bees and the link to our food. The story hinges on how commercial and hobby bee keepers continue to see mounting losses from "bee kills". For the second day in a row the Dow lost ground. Why? Oh, my a host of things that are going on and we've got the details. In other business news:
It's a branding mess that cost Oprah about $58 million;
J.C. Penny to pull the plug on yet another idea that was to have been a winner;
Big changes coming to downtown Des Moines soon as the wrecking ball comes back;
We'll check on what happened on Wall Street and why.
Plus we're talking honey, bees and economics with folks from the Iowa Honey Producers Association that were at the Statehouse today. State Apiarist Andrew Joseph is joined by Kari Kenoyer a hobbyist and Phil Ebert a commercial honey producer at Ebert Honey.
Also today members of the Des Moines Public School (DMPS) Community Legislative Action Team were at the Statehouse on a "Day of Action". I spent some time with DMPS Board of Education Chair Cindy Elsbernd and activist, mom and IT professional Claudia Brown talking about language and how, if we do things right, we've got multi-language workers right here who can make a difference for businesses seeking these types of workers. This week the Des Moines Public Schools Community Legislative Action Team went to the Iowa Statehouse to talk to legislators about a couple of items. I caught up with Cindy Elsbernd the Chair of the Des Moines Public School (DMPS) Board and Claudia Brown an activist and multilingual IT professional at a Des Moines corporation. We talked about language issues and the 7,000 students in the DMPS who can be huge assets for companies seeking multilingual employees. It's how business and education can team up and win.

This past weekend the Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, was in Iowa talking with folks that may be interested in seeing him run for president. He met with several party leaders including former Governor and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack (who last week said he would not run for the U.S. Senate against Sen. Joni Ernst) to talk and kick tires. I caught up with the Mayor at the Asian Latino Coalition event where he received a warm welcome from Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie and a crowd of roughly 75 people.
