Retain or Replace Your Customer - A Marketing Tip

Recently we did an interview with Basel Nassar the founder of Boss Nation, a collection of dog and cat food, treats and gear. During that conversation Nassar talked about relationships and how important those are when he is enlisting stores to carry his products. He said, "My marketing team wants me to spend thousands of dollars in social media outreach, and while that is important, I don't believe it is better than building solid personal relationships with the people who carry our brand."

He is so spot on.

That comment led me to this Marketing Tip and it's about building relationships with those who sell your product and those folks that buy your product. The bottom line is that we all, each of us, want to matter. We want to matter in our personal and our business lives. If we matter (or have a relationship) we are much more inclined to stay with a product or service and often for years.

That is true of startups and established businesses…but sometimes the bigger we get…the more distance we put between our business and our customers.

Click the player to listen to the entire story. It takes only five minutes but it could change how you think about your...customers...you know, the people who matter.

Pets and Public Relations with Mary Tan

When you take a product or service to market its always wise to turn to a professional who can help get your business noticed. Far too often entrepreneurs "think" they can handle their own public relations and it usually fails. Our guest today is a former television reporter that made the transition to public relations work...but not just any PR gig.  Mary Tan specializes in products for the dog and cat lovers among us. Here we talk about her work in journalism, how she made the switch to PR and what it really takes to be successful in promoting another company and some cat talk. Meet Mary Tan from Whisker Media!

Lessons in Marketing & Advertising with Jeff Greenfield of WideOrbit

We've been doing Insight on Business the News Hour in one form or another for nearly 15 years and while every business interview is, we feel, important...there are some that are critical. This is one of those moments. My guest is Jeff Greenfield the Senior VP, Buy Side at WideOrbit. We are talking advertising and marketing and using the spoken word to get the results you want...and need. Learn about getting leads (upper funnel) and helping consumers make a buying decision (lower funnel). What works? What about digital advertising? How important is it that you "stay in the game"? This should not only be required listening for business people but also media salespeople. Understanding the power radio, television and podcasting have are all linked to a higher rate of return for your advertising/marketing dollar.  (And, if you listen carefully...toward the end you'll hear Yofi our "Studio Dog"...no, really
