A Personal Effectiveness Clinic -DISC with Liz Cooney

Not long ago I was invited to take part in one of the more than fifty Tero Clinics created by Tero International. I was asked to fill out a personal assessment and then, several weeks later, directed to attend a 90-minute Zoom event. Here Liz Cooney, the Director of Training for Tero International and I talk about that experience which, quite frankly, blew me away. Click through to learn with Everything DISC is all about, the way it is presented and the eye-opening impact it had. This simple yet powerful model describes four basic styles: Dominance, Influence, Conscientiousness and Steadiness. Know yours and be able to deal with others. Fascinating.

The Business News Headlines 18 March 2022

We are being told that the two hour video conference between President Biden and President Xi Jinping was a frank and honest discussion about Ukraine. The White House said after the call that Biden described the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia. Meanwhile Xi said that his country was not in favor of the war and had they known about it they would have tried to stop it. Two words, stay tuned.  In other business news:

  • The markets had a surprisingly good week;
  • Not every U.S. business has left Russia;
  • It's the battle of the dollar stores;
  • This CEO made over 22 million dollars last year;
  • But, that's not all his board got wealthy too;
  • GM to buy up shares of an autonomous vehicle;
  • The Wall Street Report;
  • Workers, perhaps yours, do not feel...valued.

Thanks for listening to this the Friday Edition of the Business News Headlines.  We're back on the air this Sunday at Noon Central and only on News/Talk 1540 KXEL with the Business News, Week in Review.

There is so much to unpack and we've done that.  Meanwhile in the news:

  • The sad Russian Oligarch who doesn't know how to live;

Kemin a Company That Transforms Lives

We're going to take you on a journey that spans sixty-one years and do a deep dive into a family owned company that has become a multi-national giant. Here you'll learn about the very humble beginnings of Kemin Industries as the Nelson Family created (in their modest home) something called, Pig Lure to aid the world of pork production. Now, sixty-one years later, Kemin does business world-wide creating products that support the lives of pets to production animals while always keeping their mission centered on servant leadership. With me is Lauren Burt the global communications director who will help you better understand what the past two years have been like and what the company hopes to bring to the world...tomorrow.

Motivating Employees with Alison Haider of Tero International

Back in December we welcomed Alison Haider as a new hire and part-time worker at Tero International. Since then things have...changed. Alison is now a full time learning specialist. What does that mean?  We'll dive into that and also talk about motivation. What works? How can we tap into our inner motivation when working virtually? And, have you heard of a "body double"? You will today. That and we'll mention the book Your Invisible Toolbox as a motivation guide.  That and more with our friend Alison.

The Business News Headlines 3 March 2022

While we're not much for numbers this episode of the business news marks the 4,100th such report. You might say we've been doing this for some time.  Today, on this third day of March this is what we've got for you:

  • Retail is experiencing a rush toward unions;
  • Stocks tumbled again today and why;
  • What might you buy if you had the price of a barrel of oil?
  • We think you'll enjoy that piece;

  • A look at the nations economic growth;
  • The Wall Street Report;
  • The cost of a "cheap date" in many cities in the world.

Those stories plus you'll meet Steve Havemann who sits on the National Board of the Society of St. Vincent DePaul. A chance meeting allowed this to happen and it's quite the story. Plus, Steve is the grandson of famed speaker and author Joe Batten. That and so much more is right here!

Making a Global Difference - The Society of St. Vincent DePaul

They say that being "in the moment" is important because you never know what opportunity might pop up. That is exactly what happened when I answered an email sent to our city by Steve Havemann from the Society of St. Vincent DePaul. Several years ago I spoke to a local chamber and met a volunteer of the organization so I was somewhat aware of what they do...but wanted more. Steve is the Executive Director of the Des Moines Society and also sits on the national board so we take a broad view of their work and then talk about his famous grandfather, Joe D. Batten the author of the amazing book "Tough Minded Leadership" and others. Here is a link to those books...and the final one co-written by Steve.  What a great story from all sides and grateful I was paying attention.

The Great Resignation and Professional Development

Just this week we had a news story about how businesses are attempting to meet the wage issues of their employees in light of inflationary pressures. Some are instituting more than one annual performance evaluation hoping to increase wages twice a year. But is money always the answer?  My guest is Ro Crosbie the founder and president of Tero International and we're talking about the "The Roll of Professional Development During the Great Resignation".  Here she offers some solid evidence that businesses that continue to develop their talent have much better retention and productivity. Here is that conversation.

Building a Cohesive Team with Remote Workers - Liz Cooney

While more and more Americans are returning to restaurants, theaters and sporting events they are resisting the return to the office. Employers are reluctant to push the return given the labor crunch but, still, it's important to be able to build a cohesive team even if working remotely. Meet returning guest Liz Cooney from Tero International as she talks about ways managers and owners can encourage team building even when everybody isn't in the office.
