The Des Moines Metro is an amazingly vibrant region of the nation with low unemployment, a positive business climate, a strong work ethic and affordable housing...for some. While a majority (61%) of people living in the Metro enjoy housing and transportation costs that takes no more than 45 percent of their household income there is another story: The 39% of families living in the Des Moines Metro that spend an excessive amount on housing and transportation thereby making housing for them unaffordable. What is the impact to the economy and the people that are affected? We wanted to learn more and explore some solutions and asked Gunnar Olson of the Metropolitian Planning Organiztion and Eric Burmeister of the Polk County Housing Trust Fund to join us in the discussion.
