Meet Tony McGhee - Weapons of Mass Percussion

I was sitting in a club listening to a great band and visiting with the guy sitting next to me. We were talking about bands, drums and the crowd. I found Tony McGhee so interesting that I asked if he might sit down for an interview. A couple of days later we had the conversation you are about to hear. Frankly I had no idea of how deep his story is. Tony has traveled all over the U.S. done gigs in Germany and is attempting to do work with troubled youth and play for folks who have significant vision issues.  You'll hear all about that and more in this conversation.  Meet Tony McGhee!

Non-Visible Disabilities and the Fear of Flying

It was another of those chance meetings. I was sitting in the lobby of the Hotel Fort Des Moines visiting with Jenny Schuetz about our scheduled interview when a man stepped up and said, "Excuse me, but I heard you talking about the interview maybe we could do a segment? I help people with non-visible disabilities better enjoy air travel by helping them experience what it's like in an aircraft."  And so I met Jonathan Sutter who founded TravelingWiki.com an organization that encourages airports to install rooms that can help folks with autism and other non-visible disabilities become less fearful of flying. I learned much from Johnathan and my guess is that you will too.

Ringing the Peace Bell with Yoko Tanaka

This was an amazing experience. Several days before New Years Eve 2023 we saw a presser about the Japan America Society of Iowa and a gathering at the Yamanashi Peace Bell which is located near the Iowa Supreme Court Building, next to the Shattered Glass Sculpture. This bell was a gift of gratitude from the Yamanashi Prefecture to honor all of Iowa for assisting that state to get back on its feet following a devastating 1959 typhoon that impacted its hog industry.  My guest is Yoko Tanaka the Executive Director of the Japan America Society of Iowa who explains what we were doing early in the morning of the last day of 2023...and in freezing weather.

Fall Fest 2023 - Get To Know Our Community
