We talk about the stress on care-givers, the fear of losing funding, poor Medicaid reimbursement and more. To access the entire article by Cindy go here. The Iowa State Education Association - What It Means for Iowa

Over the next two months each school teacher (union and non-union) in Iowa will be forced to make a choice for their future and the future of education in Iowa. Tammy Warow is the President of the Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) and here, in this extended interview, we talk about the history of the ISEA, Chapter 20 and how it came to be and then discuss what the Iowa Legislature did, or is trying to do, to cripple the ability of teachers in Iowa to collectively bargin with their school boards. Des Moines Public Schools - School Board Candidates

The Des Moines Public School Board Election is Tuesday the 12th of September. While we don't do politics on the Business News Hour we do think education in the largest school district in Iowa does have an impact on preparing our youth to enter the job market. We spent most of the broadcast talking with two of the three At-Large Candidates running for two seats on the DMPS Board of Trustees: Rob Barron is the incumbent and Louisa Dykstra a challenger. The third candidate Kyrstin Delagardelle Shelley declined our invitation due to another commitment. In this segment we introduce the candidates.

Labor Day and Labor Unions with Charlie Wishman

Before you head off to enjoy a cold one on the boat or a picnic in the park we thought a history lesson about Labor Day might be in order. And, what about that new poll that says a vast majority of Americans think unions might be the answer to a shrinking middle class? Here Charlie Wishman of the Iowa Federation of Labor AFL/CIO talks history and more about the "attack on the workers of Iowa" and a new law that says "not voting" is considered a "no vote". We know...you've got to listen.

IPERS and Iowa Workers

There is a saying in the media world that "bad news sells". When it comes to the Iowa Public Employees Retirement System (IPERS) there has been so much bad information that it's hard to figure out if IPERS is on the verge of collapse or if it is a healthy vehicle that, founded in 1953, continues its mission to provide not only a good retirement but also a positive vehicle to hire and retain top quality teachers. Here Donna Mueller the CEO of IPERS and Matt Carver an IPERS Advisory Board Member talk about the financial stability of the program. Also of the $1.8 billion IPERS pays out each year to retirees $1.6 billion stays in...Iowa. Let's dig in shall we?

Iowa Hospitals and the Health Care Debate

This past week we had a news story that said so far, this year, 49 hospitals in the United States have closed their doors. Contrary to popular belief the Affordable Care Act was a boost to health care and to hospitals. To dig into this we invited the Iowa Hospital Association to weigh in on the health care debate. Here Scott McIntyre the Vice President of Communications for the association talks about rural health care delivery, affordability and the danger both the House and Senate versions of health care insurance options have on our hospitals, clinics and patients.
