Dramshop in Iowa - Does This Make Sense?

This history of dramshop insurance in Iowa is a long story. First enacted following Prohibition the rules of who must carry the insurance has not been updated for...decades. Yet the availability of beer, wine and spirits has evolved to the point where you can buy alcoholic drinks at the local convenience store, grocery store even drug store but only restaurants and bars must carry the very pricey insurance. Here we visit with Jessica Dunker from the Iowa Restaurant Association who is asking the Iowa Legislature to update the language so the rules reflect the times and do so before we drive out a major sector of our economy.  We think you'll find this interesting...

Taxes, Businesses and Budgets

Business groups from across Iowa are clamoring for the Iowa Legislature to reduce corporate taxes which they say, correctly, are the highest in the nation. They say it is a major problem when trying to lure business to the state. What they are not saying is that hardly any business pays the 12% rate and independent audits say Iowa ranks in the middle of all states in the U.S. We turned to economist and educator Peter Fisher from the Iowa Public Policy Project to share with us his view. In addition we asked if now, given the fiscal mess the state budget is in, how we might square that with receiving less through taxes.

Mental Health Care in Iowa - Crisis for Business

Early in December there was a political forum which featured twelve of the thirteen people running for governor of Iowa. The event sponsored by the Des Moines Register, Des Moines University and the Iowa Hospital Association drew over 700 people to hear about the delivery of mental health care in Iowa. The conversation, which we live Tweeted, was stunning. Following the event we asked Peggy Huppert from NAMI-Iowa to come in and discuss where Iowa is at when it comes to mental health care, how our care delivery impacts families and business. We think you'll find this enlightening...and a bit scary.

Buying A Meth House? What You Don’t Know

A month ago I was sitting in a Windsor Heights City Council meeting and heard a frightening story about a family who nearly purchased a "Meth House" and the dangers that presents. Meet Sarah Trone Garriott and her story about the lack of transparency, regulations, training and a "buyer beware" incident that should scare us all. Also on this broadcast is John Krusenstjerna the owner of Iowa CTS Cleaners who travels across Iowa checking for meth infected housing and, sometimes, cleans them. Sometimes...

Iowa CareGivers with Di Findley - Part One

We rarely do a "two-part" conversation with a guest however, this topic is so critical for us to understand we thought it valuable. Here Di Findley talks about the Iowa CareGivers Association and why it was first created. The association this former "nurse's aid" saw a need but it has morphed into something very necessary over the 25 years. Part Two is next.
