Public School Choice and More - Louisa Dykstra

Meet Louisa Dykstra a public school advocate, Mom and voter. Much has been made over school choice this year and Louisa reminds us that we already have lots of choice when it comes to our children and how our children learn. We had a huge news-day when we hosted Louisa so this is rather short...but we'll have her back.

Small Business and the Greater Des Moines Partnership

With the vast majority of businesses in the Greater Des Moines Metro being small businesses having very specific needs and not having answers it became a problem for sustained growth. Enter the Greater Des Moines Partnership who began a new educational outreach program. The group tapped small business owner Christina Moffatt to direct the initiative. Today we visited with her about what local chamber members can expect from this effort. It makes chamber membership an investment and not an expense. Listen in...

Students Should Be Seen and Heard

As legislators and school boards and teachers make decisions about education...who listens to the students? That is the question on the minds of the Iowa Student Learning Institute...bet you didn't know there was one. Here we talk with the ISLI president Justin Sindelar and member Taylor Larick about what they think should happen and about the upcoming Student Voice Rally scheduled for April 11. Water, Politics, Business - Des Moines Water Works

We've been doing the Business News Hour for a long time. Each weekday for nearly four years we've reported on the business news of the nation, region and the Greater Des Moines Metro. During that time we have watched the convergence of business and politics and that has changed the conversation. This interview is an example of that. Bill Stowe, the CEO of the Des Moines Water Works has been described as "The most hated man in Iowa" and as a "Moses standing up for the people against special interests". According to the Des Moines Water Works the Iowa Legislature, in a purely political move, is seeking to dismantle the Des Moines Water Works yet over 68% of the people served wish to preserve the business...and in the end it is a business. We talk about that, the drainage district lawsuit, polluted water, Flint, Michigan and more in this extended interview.

Democrats, Business, Voting the Economy and More with Martin O’Malley

We, at the Business News Hour, pride ourselves in offering "Non-Toxic Talk Radio".  In other words we don't do politics. But, from time to time, a national figure crosses our state and because politics and business has, over the past month, become so entwined we think it's fair to ask political questions that relate to business. We caught up with former presidential contender Gov. Martin O'Malley this past weekend and asked him why Democrats get a bad rap when it comes to business.  That and more right here...

Stuff to DO in the Des Moines Metro!

Last week we bid farewell to our good friend and partner for three years Sheryl Tessier from Eat. Play, Love Des Moines...we were sad to see her leave the Business News Hour and wish her the very best. So, what to do? Our first call was to Cityview because who knows better what's going on in the Des Moines Metro than those folks? Meet Jeff Pitts one of the Cityview writers who got busy finding cool stuff to do. We sat down and talked about hockey, fleas and more.  Meet Jeff Pitts:
