The Business News Headlines 22 October 2018

Today we've got the business news headlines and something extra. As many of you know we don't do politics on a daily basis. However, it is the season and we are based in Iowa. So, today, along with some of the headlines we've got a press event from today with Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) who is in Iowa stumping for various democratic candidates. In that section we'll talk about the Justice Kavanaugh hearing and the potential backlash, the economy and who is winning, her support for Iowa Secretary of State Candidate Deidre DeJear and more.  Also:

  • Sears is trying to find some cash so it can stay around for the holidays;
  • Dating and spending money;
  • President Trump wants to cut your taxes...
  • What happened today on Wall Street and why.

Also we'll talk about an event coming up with RDG here in Des Moines. The design firm is holding a major event called Design Atlas for Climate Resilience and it runs all this week. So much going on today but not to fear...you won't miss out. We've got some of the top business news stories plus a bit of public policy as we sit down with three people running for public office. But, first the news:

  • Housing intrest rates climb to 5% and that will have an impact on the housing market;
  • Considering retirement? Not until you can answer three questions;
  • New news about the Amazon pay raise and it's...mixed;
  • Papa John's stock is going up and we'll tell you why;
  • Sam and Gabe's closed their doors and the reason may not surprise you;
  • What happened today on Wall Street?  We'll share.

Also today we sit down with Rob Sand who is seeking the statewide office of Auditor. What does the State Auditor do? Why does it mater? What's the deal with the state budget? What's going on with your tax dollars and for-profit medicaid?  We asked and Rob Sand has an answers.

Also today we're going to spend some time in rural Iowa and visit with two Iowa House candidates. First up is David Weaver who is running in House District 47 which is much of Boone County. He's got a great story that we think you'll appreciate.  Meet David Weaver:

The Partnership Dinner - A Big Deal for Central Iowa

Each year the Greater Des Moines Partnership throws a party to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year and, more importantly, look ahead to the future. Recently the Partnership released the name of the keynote speaker at the event scheduled for the 17th of January.  We sat down with Jay Byers to learn more about J.D.
